Influence of Marxist historiography on Indian history writing. Gilbert Lalthazuala Roll.no:558

Marxist or historical materialist historiography is a school of historiography influenced by Marxism. The chief tenets of Marxist historiography are the centrality of social class and economic constraints in determining historical outcomes.
Marxist historiography has made contributions to the history of the working class, oppressed nationalities, and the methodology of history from below.
Marxist historiography, that is, the writing of Marxist history in line with the given historiographical principles, is generally seen as a tool. Its aim is to bring those oppressed by history to self-consciousness, and to arm them with tactics and strategies from history: it is both a historical and a liberatory project.
Historians who use Marxist methodology, but disagree with the mainstream of Marxism, often describe themselves as marxist historians (with a lowercase M). Methods from Marxist historiography, such as class analysis, can be divorced from the liberatory intent of Marxist historiography; such practitioners often refer to their work as marxian or Marxian.
In the study of early India, there are several historians working with Marxian methods.
R.S. Sharma, Romila Thapar, D.N. Jha, B.D. Chattopadhyay and Kumkum Roy are
some of them. Their researches have enriched our understanding of ancient India.

The Marxist historians have contributed enormously to Indian historiography. In all
field of Indian history, whether we divide it by periods or by topics, the Marxist historians
have made significant contributions. In several areas, their works have changed the
course of historiography. The Marxist historians do not form a monolithic bloc.
There are wide divergences of views among the Marxist historians. However, there are certain common elements among them.

The history of the dynasties was replaced by the history of the common people. More
emphasis was now given to the study of economy and society in preference to the
political history. The study of broad social and economic systems such as feudalism
and colonialism were undertaken and the social, economic and political changes were
considered not in the light of the actions of individual statesmen, but in terms of the
working out of economy and conflicts between classes. At the level of methodology,
Kosambi’s works introduced an interdisciplinary approach to history which
encompassed literature, archaeology, linguistics, anthropology, numismatics and statistics.
Moreover, the Marxist historiography has made interpretation and explanation more
important than narration or description.

SUBALTERN : T. Vanlalruati Roll No. 567

The term ‘subaltern’ has a rather long history. It was initially applied to the serfs and peasants in England during the Middle Ages. Later, by 1700, it was used for the subordinate ranks in the military. It, however, gained wide currency in scholarly circles after the works of Antonio Gramsci (1891-1937), an Italian Marxist and Communist Party leader. Gramsci generally used the term in a broader connotation of ‘class’ to avoid the censorship of the prison authorities as he was in jail and his writings were scanned. Gramsci had adopted the term to refer to the subordinate groups in the society.
In his opinion, the history of the subaltern groups is almost always related to that of the
ruling groups. In addition, this history is generally ‘fragmentary and episodic’.
Ranajit Guha, however, in the Preface to Subaltern Studies I, did not mention Gramsci’s
use of the term, even though he referred to Gramsci as an inspiration. Instead, he defined
it as given in the Concise Oxford Dictionary:
‘The word “subaltern” in the title stands for the meaning as given in the Concise
Oxford Dictionary, that is, “of inferior rank”.For example, it will be used in as a name for the general attribute of subordination in South Asian society whether this is expressed in terms of class, caste, age, gender and office or in any other way.’
A little later, at the end of his opening essay in the volume, he further clarified this term:
‘The terms “people” and “subaltern classes” have been used synonymously
throughout this note. The social groups and elements included in this category
represent the demographic difference between the total Indian population
and all those whom we have described as the “elite”.’
The Subaltern historians made a radical departure in the use of the term from that of
Gramsci. Even while accepting the subordinated nature of the subaltern groups, they
argued the their history was autonomous from that of the dominant classes.

Now there is a general and clear acknowledgement of basically two phases in the
career of the Subaltern Studies. Phase I consists of :
a) concern with the subaltern, i.e., lower, exploited classes;
b) criticism of the elite, i.e., exploiting classes; and
c) influence of Gramscian thought and Marxist social history and an attempt to work
within broader Marxist theory.
In the second phase, there is a clear shift from these concerns. Now :
a) there is an increasing engagement with textual analysis, a shift away from exploring
the history of the exploited people, and more engagement, even though critical,
with elite discourses; and
b) Marx and Gramsci are jettisoned in favour of Michel Foucault, Edward Said, and
other postmodernists and postcolonialist.     The Subaltern Studies began in the early 1980s as a critique of the existing historiography which was accused by its initiators for ignoring the voice of the people. The writers associated with the project promised to offer a completely new kind of history in the field of Indian history.

IMPACT OF MARXISM{HISTORICAL MATERIALISM} ON HISTORIOGRAPHY LALNUNPUII R/N- 564

Karl marx was born in 1818 in Trier in Germany, the son of a lawyer. He studied law and jurisprudence at the University of Berlin, but took a keen interest in History and Philosophy also.Leaving university in 1841,he became a severe critic of the economic and political order of the day and soon had to leave the land of his birth to France, then to Belgium, and finally to England. He published numerous books during his lifetime, the most notable being ‘The Communist Manifesto{1848}’ and ‘Das Capital{18 7-1894}’.
The view of life and of history developed by Marx and Engel-indeed,what makes Marxism a unified, compelling and dynamic doctrine-is the philosophy of dialectical materialism.Dialectical materialism seeks the essence of the historical process in the changing material conditions of human life.
In the Holy Family,Marx and Engels had written that “history is nothing but the activity of man pursuing his aims”.The forces and relations of economic production determine the kind of religion, philosophies, governments, laws and moral rules men accept. This means that the basic causative factor in history is at all times the economic factor.
History is human society in dialectical motion. The dialectical motion is caused by the antagonistic interest of economic classes created by the prevailing mode of production.
In Das Capital Marx stated that the primary reason for the antagonism between labor and capital is that the capitalists are able to appropriate the surplus value created by labor and which, therefore, ought to go to labor.Marx declared labor to be to be the source of all wealth and the only source of value.
History is said to have been Marx’s weakest subject at the Trier High School. The German Historian Treitschke wrote that Marx “completely lacked a scholar’s conscience” and knew what he wanted to prove before the research started,an observation A.J.P. Taylor echoes when he said that “Marx…..decided beforehand what he wanted to discover……”.
Marx held that it was possible to establish laws of social enumerates Marx’s predictions that have not been borne out by facts. The proletariat did not grow progressively poorer-what Marx saw in the 184Os was only the early stage of industrial development. The contradictions within capitalism were overcome time after time.
A.J.P. Taylor has  written that because of the Communist Manifesto,”everyone thinks differently about politics and society, when he thinks at all”.The Marx-Engels scheme had in fact combined a critique of capitalism with a general theory of historical development.

WHAT IS HISTORY LALCHHANDAMI,R/N-562

The origin of the word ‘History’ can be traced back to the Greek word ‘istoria’ meaning inquiry or research or ‘knowledge obtained as a result of inquiry’.History is mainly concerned with the activities of human beings. It is the study of events in man’s struggle for progress. In a broad sense history is a systematic account of the origin and development of human kind.
History is the result of the interplay of man with his environment and with his fellowmen.Man has always expressed himself in terms of certain basic needs such as food, clothing and shelter, social and political organization, knowledge of his environment and transmission of such knowledge,self-expression,and religious and philosophical beliefs.Such activities together make up the universal culture pattern.
When a people come to have a highly complex cultural pattern resting upon an intricate social organization and exerting wide control over nature, they may be said to have achieved what is called ‘civilization’.Civilization in all varied aspects constitutes the subject matter of history.
History is the living past of man.It is the attempt made by man through centuries to reconstruct, describe and interpret his own past.
“What is History” is a study of historiography that was written by the English Historian E.H.Carr.He argues that history should follow a middle-path,constituting a relationship “of equality,of give and take” between the Historian and their evidence. He remarks that Historian continuously moulds his facts to suit their interpretation and their interpretation to suit their facts, and takes part in a dialogue between past and present.Carr puts forward his own answer to the question of “What is History” that “it is a continuous process of interaction between the Historians and his facts,an unending dialogue between the past and the present.
In the case of History many definitions have been given by many Scholars and Men of Letters.Although there are numerous definitions of History, the ultimate definition is yet to be arrived.Perhaps can never be.

Define Subaltern. How did Subaltern begin in India? * Laldingmawia Roll No - 1201 BA 543

Subaltern means the lower class or exploited section of society. The word was associated with India in ancient time but this word was also associated with the history of other countries too. In each and every year there is lower or exploited class, which was totally neglected by the history writers or history.

The society of this class was totally neglected by the government as well as society also. Ranajit Guha is called the father of "Subaltern Studies". The books published during his time were mostly named on it. The writers or historians of Subaltern want to show the position of lower class in world as well as to show the direction to up the condition of lower class in society.

The new thoughts were given with the writing of this historian. Indian historians formed a group and wrote their own thoughts. According to Guha, Subaltern history became much famous in India and also got success at international level. According to Guha what the history writes were away from the reality of lower class he argues that History should also writes, the viewpoint of lower class. There was bounded area for the lower class which had no relation with society as well as with politics evens their presence was also neglected.

The historians who were not happy with Congress nationalism formed a new area which was even not-founded. The area the study of lower class was first touched by Guha. He wrote on (tribes, peasants) also on middle also. Now people started to look towards the problem of the lower class. He gave a new direction to the writing. This writing was totally different from other historians.

The Subaltern Studies arose in the 1980s, influenced by the scholarship of Eric Strokes, to attempt to formulate a new narrative history of India and South Asia. Where previously the history modern India and particularly of the nationalists movement was etched as a history of Indian ‘elites. Subaltern history has now always had easy relationship with feminism.

HISTORY AND OTHER DISCIPLINE Clement Zothanpuia Roll No - 1201 BA 537

These three subjects i.e History,Economics,Political science are closely connected with each other. They are influence and attached with each other. When a development or a decline happened in history of economics it effected the political or administrative system which leads to a change in the society or an empire during that period. That changed of event is what we studied in the subject of history.

HISTORY AND POLITICAL SCIENCE :  Political science is closely related to History. According to John Seeley, “History is past politics and politics is present history”. A knowledge of history is very essential for any one in understanding the evolution of political institution. The great philosopher like Plato, Aristotle, Machiavelli were able to derive their political ideas by mastering the history of political institution of the world. They in turn, gave a new outlook in history of politics.

There is close affinity between history and political science. To Sir John Seeley again, “History without political science has no fruit and Political science without History has no roots”. Action has said that, “the science of politics is the one science of deposited by the stream of history like grains of gold in the sand of river. The river itself is history, but politics deals with but part of it.

So, in short the two subject history and political science are like the two side of the same coin. “For all politics is not history as all history is not politics.

HISTORY AND ECONOMICS  : Economic is intimately connected with History just like political science. The two disciplines are inseperatable. The economic history of any period is an essential branches of history and its understanding is really important in understanding the history of any period.
Economics deals with things. Moreover it is concerned with the activities of man. History is the narration of events in the chronological order.

If anyone wants to have an idea of the role played by F.D.Roosevelt in American history, it is essential to go through the various economic measures undertaken by him during the period of Depression which is known as ‘New Deal’. From this, it is clear that history and economics are interrelated with one another.

Economics deals with production, distribution and consumption of wealth. There are various theories, which effect the functioning of society belonging to History.

HISTORY AND OTHER DISCIPLINE L. Thuamrohluna Roll No - 1201 BA 541
